Why bring your child to Kennedy Charter??

Starting with the 2014-2015 school year, Kennedy Charter Public School will be located on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University, where our students will be embedded in an environment of higher learning.
Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) President Dr. Ronald L. Carter began discussions with us in 2013 about collaborative efforts between our organization and the University. Together we have identified multiple ways each organization can bring value to the other’s mission and to the North West corridor of Charlotte.
The benefits of this collaboration are many:
• EHSC will embed our organization and services in the heart of the community from which most of our children come. This lessens transportation barriers for many families, increases awareness of our school, foster care and mental health services, and amplifies community involvement and empowerment.
• EHSC’s foster care program will be enhanced by Johnson C. Smith’s existing Foster Care Initiative that creates higher education opportunities and special support for youth from foster care.
• Kids Central of the Carolinas will be embedded in a within a vibrant community that has otherwise lacked convenient access to child-focused behavioral and mental health services.
• Every student at Kennedy Charter Public School will have exposure to higher education. Whether college-prep or vocationally oriented, our students will have access to specific JCSU academic resources, the arts, athletics and even STEM offerings as well as mentorships to enhance their academic progress and improve test scores.
Kennedy Charter is operated by Elon Homes and Schools for Children, a nonprofit organization that provides safe haven, life skills and education to children.

News & Announcements

Since the announcement by the State Board of Education that it did not want to renew the Charter for Kennedy Charter we have been flooded by calls, visits and emails from families of the school, new and long- time philanthropic supporters, graduates, volunteers and concerned citizens. The overall message we are receiving is how much people love Kennedy Charter, value the mission, and see it as an incredibly valuable academic option for Mecklenburg County students. Nobody can comprehend how the school could be closed.

Read the official North Carolina Department of Public Instruction documentation of academic growth at Kennedy Charter Public School over the past three years. Note that the school has not met Growth in only one section (Red) and Met Growth (Green) in 6 subject areas and Exceeded Growth (Blue) in 4 subject areas. Students come to us Grade levels behind and our teachers and families help them increase in academic performance.
