History

Mary Elizabeth Francis' association with the Elon Homes and Schools for Children began in the 1970's when founder Fred J. Kennedy established Boys Town south of Pineville.

After the merger of Boys Town and Elon Homes for Children in 1985, Mrs. Francis' commitment to the agency and its school operations continued and has now lasted through almost four decades.

In 1998, when the Kennedy Charter Public School was chartered, Mrs. Francis was largely responsible for funding the school’s first year. Mrs. Francis and her family have assisted the school and agency at critical times in its history.

To honor her leadership, generosity, vision, and steadfastness on behalf of Elon Homes and Schools for Children, the new elementary school division of Kennedy Charter Public School, will be named Francis Elementary School.
